About 360Insights

360Insights is a free tool to help you understand funders better. You can combine and visualise 360Giving and charity data, and explore funding across seven different areas – from grant dates to types of recipients.

360Giving commissioned David Kane to build 360Insights and ccm.design to design it.

360Insights is completely free to use, and is built on open source technology and openly-licenced data.

You can view the site code on Github. The tool makes use of Open Source tools, such as Dash by Plotly, Flask and Pandas.

Data sources

360Insights uses the 360Giving data registry to retrieve grants data published by grantmakers to the 360Giving data Standard.

Each of the files has been published by a grantmaker, usually on their own website, under a licence that allows the data to be reused and shared. They have used a common format - the 360Giving data standard - to make files in a consistent way.

When you select a dataset through 360Insights, the software will fetch the data from the publisher’s website, checks that it fits the data Standard, adds some external data if possible and then displays the results in the form of charts and a map.

When will I see my data?

If you've published data in the 360Giving Data Standard, your data should be available on 360Insights a day or two after it is shown on the 360Giving registry.

If you don't want to wait, you can upload your 360Giving format file instead.

Other data

360Insights combines 360Giving data with other data sources to expand what is possible.

Findthatcharity is used to bring in data about charities from the following sources, used under the Open Government Licence:

Charity data on Findthatcharity is updated monthly, but the data can be cached which means you may see data from longer ago.

Data on postcodes comes from postcodes.findthatcharity.uk. Postcode data from ONS used under Open Government Licence.

  • Contains Royal Mail data © Royal Mail copyright and database right 2019
  • Contains National Statistics data © Crown copyright and database right 2019

Data on companies comes from the Companies House URI service.

360Insights is designed to enable you to submit files for the application to process and then display information from them. It also generates files in CSV and Microsoft Excel formats that combine the original data with the charity or company data. You can then download these files.

Please ensure that you have the appropriate permissions to upload data to 360Insights.

Do not submit confidential or non-public personal data to this tool.

Any data you upload will be available at the URL created and can be accessed by anyone with that link. If your data is not suitable for sharing publicly then you should treat this URL with care, and only share it with people who have permission to access to the data.

We do not make use of any of the data for purposes other than to create visualisations for the data you have submitted and to review the operation and output of the application.

We do create and store metadata about your use of the application, and about the files/data that you have uploaded in order to monitor how the application is being used.
